Remember when carpet was all the rage in the kitchen? Then we had carpet tiles. Now apparently – according to the style meisters – tiles are going out of fashion. Anyone who has visited Pompei will question this. In Pompei you can see tiles literally thousands of years old – they look as good as the day they were layed. Sure they were covered for a few hundred years by vulcanic ash.

Tiles remain the eternal floor covering. Versatile… or should that be versatile.

Feature walls in kitchens are a great way to deploy tiles with great effect. You should choose the wall that is naturally dominant – that’s usually the one that most noticeable. When you enter the room which wall draws your attention – is it the largest, the one in line of view or the one with a feature like a window.

But the wall you choose to feature might also be used to manipulate the space. For example if there is a naturally dominant long wall in a rectangle shaped room the featuring of that wall with the use of decorative tiles will probably accentuate it, causing the room to look “skinny”. Conversely if you want to “square up” try making a smaller wall draw the eye.

It’s not just cost factors that determine your choice of floor coverings. We’ve got clients who weight environmental issues above what their floor covering is going to cost in terms of materials and installation.

To avoid petroleum based flooring in your home go for ceramic tiles. Carpet and vinyl flooring (including vinyl tiles) are largely oil based. To many people they smell. This is especially true when newly layed. These coverings continue to give off vapors for many years. Many believe these emissions become part of your body.

You should also note that ceramics are not a low energy product. The production of tiles uses huge quantities of energy . You need to offset the production costs on the envronment with the fact that tiles should last for decades or in some cases centuries. That durability makes tiles a good environmental option when comparing with vinyl and carpet.

What happens to old carpet. Is it burned or used for landfill? Yes, both of the above.
